When we reach in our
80’s our portion of food needs to be cut into bite size pieces so it becomes
easier for us to get our food with using a spoon and fork.
We have a harder time
grasping using our utensils when we eat our daily meals. We tend to have an
assistance to help cut our food for us.
My father in-law loves
eating fish, but he has a harder time removing the fish bones off the fish. We
learn to buy fish that has been already removed the fish bones in what we call
it boneless. This way we can cut it up in bite size pieces for him to be able
to chew his food and not worry he will choke.
Later as your parents
become older you will realize there will be an adjustment period in the way you
eat with your family members.
You will realize your
parents need more assistance from you even if they will not ask for it, but you
can tell the way they are having a hard time when they eat their meals.
- They have less strength as they eat and you will need to adjust yourself in making those changes by giving him a glass that allows him to hold on it and doesn’t slip off his hands.
- A plate that is durable that it doesn’t break if it
falls off the table.
- A chair that has two arms rests on both ends so they
don’t fall off their chair as they stay on the side.
- Eating utensils that are light weight and not heavy for
them to use while eating
- No sharp objects near them prevent having accidents at
the table.
- Your home becomes safety for the elderly as they don’t
slip off from the bathroom with bath safety handle while they are using
the toilet and shower.
- Make sure you have the proper chair while they take a
shower they can also seat down prevent them slipping.
- Install bathroom non slip mat prevents them slipping on
a wet floor these are the kind we put in our bathroom.
- Beds that can be recline to go up and down when they
want to seat upwards.
