When the longing for authentic Pinoy dishes strikes in the U.S., Isla Grand stands ready to transport your taste buds back to the Philippines.

Carmina is traveling to the United States to spend time with her family. My dad planned a family gathering for Mother's Day at their favorite Pinoy restaurant . Since reservations aren’t possible, we arrived an hour early to ensure we could get a table for twelve before everyone else showed up. As my dad approached Isla Grand , the branch we visited in Pleasant Hills, California , the host at the door said they could prepare a table for twelve at five o'clock. Later, the server called my dad's name and guided us to our table. The place was bustling with people enjoying meals and celebrating Mother's Day. On our first visit to Isla Grand, I was captivated by the décor, noticing many native items that gave the place a fancy yet authentic Filipino feel. They usually have a live band, but unfortunately, there was no entertainment the night we went. My family had spoken highly of Isla Grand and encouraged us to try the Filipino dishes we’ve been missing from back home. Lech...

Carmina's Daily Routine in the Kitchen

I guess everyone knows Carmina can cook around her kitchen by making a meal.

Yes, people thought a person who use to rely on Manang V to cook a meal for us. Yet they had no clue Carmina grew up in the United States.

There no such thing having an employee to work for you not unless you've got the money.

I grew up learning to cook different types of food as we are getting older. Our taste buds begin to change from all international food somewhat we learn the dishes we feel like eating that day.

Life is food no one will be able to provide a meal if you don't know how to cook. Who will do it for you when you're feeling hungry.

I know it taste time to work around doing everything on your own. It is a training part with new changes giving you independency without following a daily menu.

Every two weeks I need to think what I feel like cooking making sure it isn't a repeat because somewhat I can relate to my friends. Sometimes I don't have an appetite when I cook my meal.

I finally found my own routine to work around my schedule.

The only benefit is I have a website filled with recipes with pictures. All I need is to make the dish and take a video share it with everyone.

The night before I have decided what dish I would cook. I would bring out my ingredients out from the freezer and defrost it. I prefer to do it one day ahead having it marinated putting all the seasoning.

Example:

In the afternoon I brought out some frozen thigh chicken from the freezer. When it is already defrosted enough to separate each piece, I would wash it with water add black pepper and salt on both sides placing inside a plastic container. They say air dry in the refrigerator is the way to let the chicken dry up overnight.

Somehow you get inspired to cook a meal for yourself.

One thing I realized when I was living with someone else food was limit by the portion you would like to eat each meal. I no longer need to worry how much I eat the food I want to eat. I pay for my own groceries.

I don't need to worry what other people say when you eat a lot. Basically, your free from people living with you.

The funny thing from all the cooking I am losing weight.

I realized ever since I was young no matter how much I eat. It is easy to burn it off especially when you think about it there are stairs in the house. Going downstairs and upstairs daily adds exercise to your daily routine.
