Carmina was shopping with Mom Violy at Robinsons Magnolia when she unexpectedly spotted onion rings while passing the freezer section. She remembered Becky mentioning them a few days ago, so she decided to grab a package since it was only around two hundred pesos. Carmina was putting away her groceries placing in the freezer began to read the package of Maestro Chicken Onion Rings later realized made a big mistake. I guess we learn something new when being preoccupied during our grocery shopping. The next day came decided to fry some chicken onion rings and found out they actually taste good dipping it with barbecue sauce. When I use to live in California my family and close friends would always request me to make them turon which is like a lumpia, but has banana, jack fruit and brown sugar inside.
This is a very easy Filipino dessert that is very easy and simple to make. I learn to make a lot and store it in a Tupperware with wax paper and place it in a freezer.
When you decide to have an unexpected guest come over you can easily fry it when they are at your home.
Ingredient for those who don't live in the Philippines:
- 1 - Package of frozen lumpia wrapper (can be found in the Asian Store in the freezer section)
- 6 pieces of ripe saba (banana) (cut in half lengthwise)
- 1 - Can of jack fruit in Tagalog it is Langka (drain the jack fruit and slice)
- 1 1/2 cup Brown sugar
- 2 cups cooking oil
- 1 small soup bowl with half water
- Vanilla Ice-cream (optional)
For those living in the Philippines you will be using fresh lumpia wrapper and langka.
Instructions:
- Place the brown sugar by spreading it on the flat plate
- Place the saba on top of the sugar
- Separate the lumpia wrapper and place on a separate plate
Wrapping:
You will get one lumpia wrapper and place it on a plate add one saba, add some jack fruit and wrap it up by folding it halfway and close each side together, than roll it again until it close. On the end you will use water to seal the end of the lumpia wrapper.
Keep doing this until you have made 12 pieces of turon.
Frying:
In a pan you will heat the oil and put in some sugar wait until it is golden brown.
You will add the turon in the pan wait until it is golden brown and turn it on each side.
Place it on a plate and best to eat when still hot.
My favorite part on adding turon is two scoops of vanilla ice-cream.
