When the longing for authentic Pinoy dishes strikes in the U.S., Isla Grand stands ready to transport your taste buds back to the Philippines.

Carmina is traveling to the United States to spend time with her family. My dad planned a family gathering for Mother's Day at their favorite Pinoy restaurant . Since reservations aren’t possible, we arrived an hour early to ensure we could get a table for twelve before everyone else showed up. As my dad approached Isla Grand , the branch we visited in Pleasant Hills, California , the host at the door said they could prepare a table for twelve at five o'clock. Later, the server called my dad's name and guided us to our table. The place was bustling with people enjoying meals and celebrating Mother's Day. On our first visit to Isla Grand, I was captivated by the décor, noticing many native items that gave the place a fancy yet authentic Filipino feel. They usually have a live band, but unfortunately, there was no entertainment the night we went. My family had spoken highly of Isla Grand and encouraged us to try the Filipino dishes we’ve been missing from back home. Lech...

Herbal Cure the Old Fashion Way

Once in awhile we have someone coming to our home to do herbal treatment for my in-law or the employee.

The lady who came by the house asked, me if I believe in herbal medicine I said, it really depends on what it is. As I was watching her I couldn't believe my eyes she had used a leaves called, taboo taboo she had massage the employee's knee with mentholated oil on his sprain from playing basketball. He can't walk on one leg being injured.

The lady who we call her hilot which specialize in herbal medicine was massaging his knee and she had went to the kitchen and started heating up the leaves on the stove top

I was able to take a video of what she was doing.

The female employee was also feeling pain from her back and she also massaged her before placing the leaves on the area she was feeling pain.

The hilot claimed she had her back pain from sweating and being against an electric fan not changing clothes once she starts to get wet.

I asked, the hilot how long does she leave the leaf on her back she said, when the leaves dries up and it will cure the pain.

You are not allowed to take a shower that day when you are being treated.

I started interviewing her asking what other leaves can she tell me that can cure you the herbal way. She didn't want me to take a picture of herself or be in my blog.

But, she said, I can just ask her questions and give me a list of herbal leaves that she uses to cure other people.

I asked, where does she even buy the herbal leaves she said, in Quiapo, Philippines.

Herbal leaves used to cure the traditional old Filipino way:
  1. Taboo taboo Leaves - cure sprain and body pain
  2. Atis Leaves - headache, stomach ache and gas
  3. Tawa - tawa Leaves - measles, dengue, skin itchiness and asthma (boil and drink one cup)
  4. Kalabo Leaves (oregano) - menstruation cramps, urinary tract disorder, respiratory and gastrointestial
  5. Lagundi Leaves - sore throat, stop coughing, relieve asthma, discharge phlegm and lower fever
The hilot was explaining in the old generation people believe taking everything herbal rather than consulting their doctor for help. During the century ago people used herbal medication to cure them and spend less money on medicine. They had cure themselves the natural way.

How much do you pay?

It all depends on the person who hilot you all rates are different.
